How these times are calculated
Time = pages × words per page ÷ words per minute. We use 238 words per minute: a 2019 review of 190 studies found that adults reading English silently average about 238 words per minute for non-fiction and 260 for fiction, slower than the figures often quoted (Brysbaert, Journal of Memory and Language, 2019).
We assume about 250 words per page. Printed pages hold anywhere from about 240 words (a small 5×8-inch paperback) to about 390 (a 6×9-inch trade size); an author survey put typical fiction at 280. We use the lower end, so a dense hardcover may take you longer than shown. (Gatekeeper Press, Kindlepreneur)
Page counts on book pages are the median across editions listed on Open Library, so a large-print or illustrated edition of the same book can be much longer. Your own pace depends on the book, the hour and the chair; the most reliable number is the one you measure. That is what Bookwisp’s reading timer is for.
